임오군란 직후 청국의 간섭 강화에 따른 조선의 대영(對英) 관계 정립 추이 : 민영익과 박영효·김옥균의 조청 속방관계에 대한 인식 차이를 중심으로

Abstract

This article aims to explain the perception of the Qing Dynasty by Park Young-hyo, who was Korean mission to Japan as a plenipotentiary, and Kim Ok-kyun and Min Young-ik, who unofficially accompanied the plenipotentiary after the Imo Rebellion. Specifically, this article analyzes their conversations with H. S. Parkes, the British Minister to Japan, in which they expressed their opposition to the Qing dynasty. Ultimately, this article identifies the process by which Korea and Britain established a mutual relationship in the face of increasing Qing interference in the immediate aftermath of the Imo Rebellion. When the Imo Rebellion broke out, Parkes dispatched the Royal Navy's Flying Fish to Korea to check the foreign policy of Heungseon Daewongun, who had seized power in an uprising. Heungseon Daewon conveyed to the British that the Korea government would honor the treaties it had signed with the United States, Britain, and Germany just prior to the uprising. However, the Qing dynasty sent troops to confine the Heungseon Daewon army to Tianjin and suppress the Imo Rebellion, and then intensified its interference in Korea. Under such circumstances, Park Young-hyo, Kim Ok-kyun, and Min Young-ik expressed their opposition to Qing interference in Korea to Parkes. However, while Min Young-ik sought to restore the ceremonial nature of Korea-Qing Tributary Relationship without Qing interference, Park Young-hyo and Kim Ok-kyun sought Korea's independence based on Western international law. In conclusion, Min Young-ik promoted the coexistence between the ceremonial Korea-Qing Tributary Relationship and an open-door policy toward the West as a way to overcome Qing interference and preserve King Gojong's rulership, while Park Young-hyo and Kim Ok-kyun rejected Korea-Qing Tributary Relationship and sought equal state relations based on international law.
