Abstract

There are two major 'empire' discourses in the explanatory system of ancient Japanese history (especially in Japanese academia). One is to regard Su(隋) and Tang(唐), which formed a unified dynasty after the end of the sixth century, as 'world empire' and the other is to regard Japan at that time as 'small empire'. The 'small' is that it is the case in preparation for China, and as will be described later, it is based on the fact that the weakness and dwarfism of the 'empire' structure were the characteristics and limitations of ancient 'empire' Japan. It was Ishimoda's so-called "Eastern small empire" theory that led to ancient Japan's "Empire". His books "The Ancient State of Japan" (1971) and "The Theory of the Ancient State of Japan" (1973) were representative research results that showed this essence. The issues raised here, such as "International Instruments for the Establishment of the State" theory and "Chief" theory, had a profound influence on the academic world, defining the direction of future research on ancient history. It can be said that the domestic and international self-portrait of the ancient Japanese state of Japan, and the internal structure of it were depicted through the concept of "Eastern small empire ". In this article, using Sho Ishimoda's theory of "Eastern small empire" as the subject of the review, I summarized my thoughts on the nature of the empire along with several logical systems that form the framework of ancient Japanese history. The basis of ancient Japanese imperial logic is the idea of a great state, and how it was functioning in reality was analyzed through examples of diplomatic rituals. In addition, I recently proposed the so-called God-Savage structure as a differentiated statement from Chinese self-centrism, confirming that it shows the characteristics of Japan's imperial character and can be a logical structure to explain the relationship between Han and Savage.
