Abstract
Park Sedang was one of the figures who provided the impetus for the formation of the Soron faction in the late Joseon period. It is said that he had over one hundred literary disciples, but among them, only about six are known to have left collected works. Of these, only four—Kim Jusin, Choi Changdae, Lee Deoksu, and Jo Taeeok—reveal aspects of their literary theories through their writings. An examination of the literary theories of Park Sedang and his four disciples shows that they shared a fundamentally common understanding of literature. They all regarded content and essence as the core of literature and as the ultimate goals to be realized. Therefore, their literary thought exhibits essential uniformity. What deserves attention, however, are the points of differentiation among them. Although all emphasized the conveyance of meaning and considered content central to literature, they diverged in their specific approaches to how to create Park Sedang pursued writing that was plain, natural, logically coherent, and thematically clear, regarding propriety and soundness as the most important principles of composition. Kim Jusin viewed meaning as the most crucial aspect of writing and criticized the prevailing tendency to seek novelty and strangeness. Jo Taeeok argued that in order to compose outstanding poetry, one should focus on the sincerity of emotion rather than relying on unusual or overly elaborate language. In contrast, Choi Changdae and Lee Deoksu did not reject literary technique; rather, they attributed considerable value to it. They distinguished between poetry and prose, viewing their methods of creation differently. The perspectives of Choi Changdae and Lee Deoksu thus advanced one step further toward recognizing the autonomy of literature compared to those of Park Sedang, Kim Jusin, and Jo Taeeok.
