‘구문적 단위’의 유형에 대하여

On the Types of ‘Constructional Units’

초록

본 연구에서는 국내의 구문 관련 논의가 주로 문장을 대상으로 이루어져 오다가 구문문법 이론의 도입 이후 문장 외의 다양한 구문 유형에 관심을 두게 되었고, 개별 구문에 대한 분석과 기술을 추구하는 방향으로 전개되고 있음을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 구문이라는 대상이 실로 다양한 언어 단위에 걸쳐 있으며 상당히 이질적인 문법적‧의미적 특징들이 모두 분석의 대상이 된다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 한편, 구문과 관련된 여러 가지 정의를 살펴보면서 대체로 ‘통사적 연쇄 또는 결합적 패턴’에 대한 인식이 공통된다는 것을 보였다. 특히 ‘복합 형식’이 구문의 본질이라는 점을 확인하였다. 그리고 구문적 단위의 유형은 무엇을 기준으로 설정하느냐에 따라 다양하게 나뉠 수 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 첫째는 언어 단위, 둘째는 관습성이 드러나는 언어 층위, 셋째는 단어 선택 및 통사 배열의 정규성/규칙성 여부, 넷째는 의미 해석에 관여되는 비유의 특성, 다섯째는 구문의 위계 관계, 여섯째는 구문이 표시하는 의미적 특성, 일곱째는 어떤 단일 형식에 대한 기능적‧의미적 대당성, 여덟째는 명명법 등이다. 이렇듯 구문적 단위의 유형화를 다양하게 시도하는 것은 분절된 언어 단위와 의미 사이의 대응 관계에 대한 우리의 이해를 넓히는 한편, 문법론 연구의 지평을 확대하는 데에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 보았다.

Abstract

In this study, it was confirmed that domestic research on constructions was mainly focused on sentences. However, after the introduction of construction grammar theory, researchers became interested in various types of constructions other than sentences. They started developing in the direction of analyzing and describing individual constructions. Through this, it was found that the denotation of construction spans a variety of linguistic units, and all grammatical and semantic features, which are quite heterogeneous, became the targets of analysis. On the other hand, examining various definitions related to construction revealed that the perception of ‘syntactic sequences or syntagmatic patterns’ was generally common. Particularly, it was confirmed that the ‘complex form’ is inherent in the nature of construction. It was also verified that the types of constructional units can be classified in various ways depending on the criterion. These criteria include linguistic units, linguistic levels revealing conventionality, regularity of word selection and syntactic arrangement, figurative characteristics involved in meaning interpretation, hierarchical relationships among constructions, semantic characteristics indicated by constructions, functional and semantic correspondency for a single form, and terminology for a specific construction. In this way, various attempts to categorize constructional units could contribute to expanding the horizon of grammatical research and broadening our understanding of the correspondence between segmented linguistic units and their meaning.
