Abstract
After the 1997 Asian financial crisis, financial markets of East Asian countries have been substantially liberalized and globalized. In particular, the stock market has taken a major role in cross-border capital flows. This paper analyzes how far stocks markets of the U.S. and East Asian countries(Korea, Japan, China, and the ASEAN Big-5) are integrated and interdependent on each other using daily data covering the period between February 1, 2000 and July 31, 2007. Our analysis shows that there exists Granger causality from the U.S. to East Asian markets, and the vice versa. Moreover, a shock to the U.S. stock is immediately transmitted to the East Asian markets. Likewise, shocks to East Asian markets affect the next day’s U.S. stock market. Among East Asian countries, Korea and Singapore, but not Japan, appear to play a key role as sources of shocks affecting the regional financial market as a whole. The growing openness and interdependence of regional financial markets asks for closer cooperation to improve their regulatory environment, particularly to enhance consistency of capital and financial market regulations and policies.
