Abstract
This article deals with one of the most intriguing images of J. S. Bach, namely, Bach, the universal, first proposed by Robert Marshall in the second half of 1980s. By drawing upon the fact that the notion coincides with the emergence of new musicology (or post modern musicology) of the same period, I will discuss various ways in which the latter figures into the former, arguing that Bach images gradually, but evidently has begun to change. In order to trace the change, the article focuses upon the musicologist, Susan McClary, who, arguably, one of the most important scholars who criticizes the universal Bach. This article also discusses John Butt’s writing who examines the universal Bach by proposing that notion of modernity in the composer’s works links the music of Bach to the contemporary sensibility.
