Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reflect on the notion, “Bach, The Progressive,” proposed by Robert Marshall in 1976. The notion or the image of Bach was first introduced to the Bach scholarship when the image of Bach, the traditional was still highly prevalent and effective. By considering that the notion challenges the traditional images of Bach, the pious Lutheran whose music is based upon the contrapuntal technique, representing true German and the climax of Western music history, I will analyze the nature of Marshall’s argument, and trace how it figures into some of the most important writings of the Bach scholarship between 1970s to the first decade of 2000.
