이 글이 주목하는 문제는 바흐연구와 신음악학과의 관계에 관한 것이다. 음악학의 지류중 가장 보수적이라 평가받는 바흐연구는 과연 신음악학과 관련이 있는가 또는 없는가라는질문을 다루고 있다는 의미이다. 1985년 미국의 음악학자 커만은 자신의 저서, 『음악을 생각한다』를 통해 당시 음악학의 연구대상과 방법론 등을 비판하고 이것을 넘어서는 새로운패러다임을 제시하였다. 커만이 제시한 새로운 패러다임은 커만 스스로에 의해 비평, 그리고이후 학자들에 의해 신음악학이라 명명되었다. 그러나 과연 신음악학이 바흐연구에도 침투하였는지, 또는 하지 못하였는지 논의하고 있는 연구는 찾아보기 어렵다. 이 글은 이러한 질문을 염두에 두고 1950년대 이후 바흐연구가 지나온 행적을 분석함으로써 신음악학의 영향력을 진단하려 한다.
Abstract
The focus of this paper lies in the relation of New Musicology to current Bach Scholarship. New Musicology is the term that refers to the ideas, thoughts, and notions proposed by JosephKerman in his monograph, Contemplating Music: Challenges to Musicology, published in 1985. Inthis book, Kerman argues that current musicology appears to adhere to one particularmethodology and philosophy of the time, namely, positivism. In turn, he proposes a new type ofmusicology in which a musicologist tries to both establish facts as well as interpret them as needed. This paper traces Bach Scholarship since 1950 to explore if New Musicology influences BachScholarship in one way or another.
