이 글의 관심은 바흐담론의 내부와 외부에서 유통되는 바흐의 이미지(들)이다. 그리고이 글은 바흐의 이미지들이 바흐담론 안에서 어떤 과정과 절차를 통해 생산되고 재생산되고 또 해체되는지 추적한다. 이를 위해 이 글은 19세기를 대표하는 포크켈과 슈피타, 그리고 20세기를 대표하는 허츠와 볼프의 문헌을 분석한다. 비록 정도의 차이는 있다하나 이들의 연구는 고귀하고 숭고한 인품을 지닌 위대한 작곡가 바흐, 독일 루터교 교회음악의 완성자, 최선을 다하는 천재 등의 이미지를 창조하였다. 이 글은 이러한 이미지를 전통적인 바흐의 이미지로 규정하고 이들이 음악학적인 비판의 대상이 되어야 함을 강조한다.
Abstract
This study deals with Bach images that we encounter in the various types of academic and non-academic context. By arguing that various types of Bach images are constructed in the course of Bach literature, this study traces how they were first created, recreated, and circulated throughout the history of Bach discourse. After reviewing some of the representative studies carried out by Forkel, Spitta, Herz and Wolff, this study spells out some of the Bach images that these scholars created, the images of a German hero, genius, and true Lutheran who has extraordinary musical talent, creating the most sublime Lutheran music ever. This study proposes that these images lead Bach scholars (and connoisseurs alike) to identify the composer, the traditional, thereby calling also for critical analysis.
