Abstract

In the 1940s, the readjustment of sardine oil extraction, rice milling and soju brewing industries occurred under the control of Joseon Key Commodities Corporation, a special-purpose entity established to expand productive capacity in the military sector after industrial readjustment and diversion in the civil sector. This study aims to analyze the special-purpose corporation's activities for industrial readjustment and the outcomes of such activities. Previous studies that reviewed policies for colonial logistics mobilization and industrial readjustment during the 1940s were characterized by the presence of logical conflicts with studies of the industrialization of Korea during the 1930s, national/ ethnic biases in industrial readjustments and their outcomes, and non-ignorable gaps between theories and practices including bold research hypotheses. From the perspective of industrial history, the present study empirically analyzes the rise and growth of three major Korean-capitalized or readjusted industries, the reality and outcome of industrial readjustments, and the impact of such readjustments by capital and ethnicity.
