Abstract

This study aims to analyze the process toward build the Chosun Machine Works which was the most representative machine company in Incheon and its management until the war defeat of Japan. By doing this analysis, I seek to examine closely the process for fostering current industries of Japanese Imperialism in wartime system. The Chosun Machine Works was founded by the political aim to react under current situation in the late 1930s. Its capital accumulation was the process for enhancing haracteristics as a munitions company relative to the establishment of the wartime system in Japan. The important products of the Chosun Machine Works skipped from the peaceful civil mining machinery through an army bomb shell, drilling machine, and navy vessel engine to a submarine called as a decisive weapon of war: it directly appeared the change of its characteristics. The process of the capital accumulation of the Chosun Machine Works showed that colonial industrialization in Chosun which had been developed rapidly from the late 1930s on had the characteristics as munitions industry. In addition, it also revealed structural limits of industrialization. Like this, as the Chosun Machine Works continued to grow, it has become increasingly reliable on Japan in almost all aspects of not only the market but also capital, technology, and machinery and equipment. In conclusion, this characteristic is one of the critical limits of colonial industrialization in Chosun since the late 1930s.
