Abstract
This paper examines the effects of financial opening on the financial development(FD) and whether those effects vary with the stage of economic development. In empirical work, cross-country sample of 106 countries are used. Among various FD indicators, the liquid liabilities and the claims of deposit money banks are mainly affected by macroeconomic fundamentals such as income level and inflation, but not by financial openness. Basically, those indicators increase steadily as real economy grows, regardless of development stages. On the contrary, the stock markets development is closed linked to the financial openness. However, the positive effect does not hold for underdeveloped countries. For the developed and upper-middle income countries, the financial opening and freer market regulations are more important.
