통화 국제화를 논의할 때 국제화된 통화가 갖는 이점도 있지만 통화 국제화로 인해 자국통화의 국경간 거래가 활발해지면 일반적으로 통화정책의 유효성이 떨어지거나 외환시장이 불안정해져서 결국은 환율의 변동성이 높아진다는 우려도 있다. 정책당국은 이런 우려 때문에 자국통화가 국경간 거래에 사용되는 것을 기피하거나 까다롭게 규제하고 있다. 본 연구는 통화 국제화의 비용측면에서 자국통화의 국경간 거래가 증가될 때 환율의 변동성이 높아지는지를 BIS와 IMF의 자료를 이용하여 실증분석을 하였다. 일반적인 우려와 달리 분석결과는 자국통화의 국경간 거래가 증가되어도 환율의 변동성은 높아지지 않는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
When it comes to currency internationalization, the cross-border use of a currency is generally banned or tightly controlled because of concerns that it might destabilize the currency value or weaken the effectiveness of monetary policy without regard to the benefits of currency internationalization. Therefore, this paper empirically tests whether this concern is true using panel data from the BIS and IMF. Contrary to the concerns of the authorities, our empirical results demonstrate that the cross-border use of a currency lowers the volatility of the exchange rate.
