본 연구는 미국 금융위기이후 국제통화에 관한 논란의 가속화속에 원화의 국제화를 논하기에 앞서 우리나라 결제통화에 대한 연구의 필요성을 제기하고 있다. 이를 분석하기 위해 수출국통화(PCP), 수입국통화(LCP), 국제거래통화(제3국:VCP, 주로 달러) 등 결제행태별로 나누어 실증연구를 하였다. 분석에 앞서 세계자료와 우리나라 무역자료를 토대로 Grassman 법칙(1973)이후 국제무역에서의 정형화된 현상이 있는지에 대해 검토를 한 결과, 국제무역 거래에서는 여전한 정형화된 현상이 발견되었지만, 선진국간의 거래에서는 자국통화결제비중이 낮아지고 있는 것을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 실증분석대상 9개국 패널분석결과는 원화(수출국통화)가 강세일수록 원화결제(PCP: 수출국통화결제)비중이 증가하는 것으로 나타났으며, 시장점유율이 낮을수록 수입국통화결제(LCP)비중이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 우리나라 수출입의 결제행태가 대부분 국제거래통화결제(VCP, 주로 미달러)로 이루어지는 이유는 원/달러 환율변동성이 다른 통화를 기준으로 한 환율변동성보다 낮아 상대적으로 환율안정성이 높기 때문인 것으로 나타났다. 이로서 본 실증연구결과로 원화의 국제화 즉 원화결제비중이 높이기 위해서는 인플레이션과 환율의 안정이 우선이 된다는 것이 본 연구의 시사점이다.
Abstract
This paper empirically examined the determinants of currency invoicing in Korean trade from 1992 to 2013. Although the currency of invoicing is central for the transmission of monetary policy, empirical research on this topic is scarce due to a lack of data. With 9 countries invoicing dataset and a panel model analysis this paper shows that the stability of exchange rate volatility and inflation rate play a decisive role in the choice of the won as invoicing currency. An increase of dollar invoicing due to lower exchange rate volatility supports the role of the dollar as vehicle currency. The higher inflation rate in Korea, the lower of the currency of won invoicing. This study have the differentiation from the existing papers in that the empirical study in the invoicing currency in the Korean trade.
