Abstract
The underlying premise for parents' investment in their children's private tutoring is that private tutoring will improve their children's school performance and future labor market outcomes. Does investment in private tutoring indeed bring about substantial returns on school performance as parents expect? This study uses Korea Labor and Income Panel Study to investigate whether private tutoring experience helps high school students enter a college. The results suggest some evidence that private tutoring successfully leads high school students to a college. The results from a recursive model, which consists of a structural form equation for college entrance and a reduced form equation for tutoring expenditure, indicate that a 10% increase in tutoring expenditure raises the likelihood of entering a top 31 college or a medical school by 0.6∼0.7%. The impact of tutoring is slightly larger at 0.81% for a general 4-year college including top schools. This finding implies that private tutoring plays a very decisive role in the inter-generational transmission of education and income, and that the expected return of private tutoring on entering a (prestigious) college may be partly contributing to the growing ‘private tutoring fever' in Korea.
