본 연구에서는 기업에 대한 외국인소유가 기업의 연구개발투자에 미치는 영향을 통계청 기업활동조사의 2006～2008기간 패널 기업자료를 바탕으로 실증 분석하였다. 본 연구의 확률효과 토빗모형 추정결과들을 기초로 볼 때, 첫째 외국인소유 지분이 높을수록 연구개발투자비율은 낮아지고 둘째, 외국인소유의 연구개발에 대한 부정적 효과는 중소기업표본에서만 유의하고 대기업표본에서는 유의하지 않음을 확인하였다. 셋째, 외국인소유 지분이 과반이 넘는 기업에서만, 그리고 모회사가 있는 기업에서만 외국인소유지분의 부정적 효과가 유의하게 나타났다. 본 연구는 신뢰도 높고 포괄적인 자료범위를 갖는 양질의 기업수준 자료를 바탕으로 국제화와 R&D 투자활동에 대한 분석을 제공하였다.
Abstract
This study empirically investigates the effect of foreign ownership on R&D investment based on firm-level panel data set of the period 2006～2008 from Business Activity Survey, Statistics Korea. The random-effects tobit regressions reveal the following. First, foreign ownership lowers R&D investment intensity. Second, the negative effect of foreign ownership on R&D is valid only for the small and medium sized enterprises. Third, the negative effect is statistically significant when the foreign ownership is a majority ownership or when the firm has a parent firm. This study provides evidence on the relationship between the globalization and R&D activity based on a high-quality and comprehensive firm-level data.
