본 논문은 제조업에 포함되며 코스피와 코스닥에 상장된 1082개의 기업을 대상으로 2001년부터 2009년까지의 최근 9년간의 데이터를 사용하여 실증분석을 시도하였다. 실증분석 결과, 우리나라 제조업에 대한 외국인 직접투자의 기업에 대한 생산성 효과는 통계적으로 유의한 것으로 나타나 외국인 직접투자에 대한 긍정적인 인식과 일치하는 결과를 보여준다. 하지만 외국인 직접투자는 해당기업과 전방산업에서 생산성을 증가시키는 반면, 후방산업에는 부정적인 영향을 주는 결과가 도출되었다. 또한, 본 논문에서 새롭게 발견한 사실은, 생산성이 높은 기업일수록 외국인 직접투자에 대한 생산성이 보다 명확히 유의한 영향을 주는 것으로 나타나, 외국인 직접투자 유치시 생산성이 높은 기업일수록 그 효과보다 클 것으로 보인다.
Abstract
This paper examines the effect of foreign ownership on productivity of Korean firms from 2001 to 2009. We find that as the share of foreign ownership increases, their productivity has been increased in manufacturing sectors. More importantly, we show that firm heterogeneity in the productivity matters. That is, only the firms from a group of high productivity improve their labor productivity and reduce their employment as the share of foreign ownership increases. In addition, the increased share of foreign ownership in upstream industries affects positively the firms’ productivity, while the increased share in downstream industries decreases it.
