기업생산성에 대한 환율변동의 업종별 파급효과 분석

초록

본 연구는 1984～2012년 대상으로 우리나라 기업 미시자료를 이용한 기업수준에서 환율변동에따른 기업생산성에 대한 효과를 분석하였다. 패널모형을 이용하여 전체기업을 대상으로 생산성에대한 영향을 분석한 결과 환율변동성이 기업생산성에 음(-)의 부정적인 효과를 미친다는 것을발견하였다. 8개 업종별로 세분화하여 분석한 결과에서는 자동차․기타 운송장비 제조업의음(-)의 효과가 가장 큰 것으로 나타났고, 그 다음으로는 비금속․광물제품 제조업과 전자부품․전기장비 제조업 순서로 효과가 큰 것으로 나타나 환율변동성이 생산성에 미치는 효과가업종별로 차이가 있음을 의미한다. 기업규모별로 추정한 결과, 중소기업과 중견기업의 기업생산성에 유의한 음(-)의 효과를 확인한 반면 대기업은 유의하지 않은 값으로 추정되었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 중소기업을 중심으로 R&D 강화 및 효율적인 기술개발 등을 통해 생산성제고를 도모할 필요가 있으며 업종별로 차별화된 미시적인 접근이 요구된다고 할 수 있다.

Abstract

This study analyzes the effect of the exchange rate volatility on firm productivity using Korean firm level micro data during 1984～2012. Using a panel model we find that exchange rate volatility has a negative effect on productivity in the sample of all companies. In the analysis of eight industries, the size of negative effect on auto․transportation equipment industry is the largest, followed by the non-steel industry and electronic-component․equipment industry. This result shows that the effect of exchange rate volatility on the firm productivity depends on the industry characteristics. While statistically significant negative effect is evident in the sample of small and medium-sized enterprises, the negative effect is not clear in the sample of large companies. Policy implication that can be considered on the basis of empirical results is that small and medium-sized firms should concentrate on the R&D enhancement and efficient technology development. While doing so, differentiated approach considering industry characteristics is required.
