Abstract

This study explores the transformation of Sokje (俗祭), or informal royal ancestral rites, and the characteristics of ritual food offerings at Chilgung (七宮, the Seven Shrines) during the late Joseon period. Originally confined to royal shrines and tombs, Sokje gradually expanded to include the shrines and tombs of crown princes and royal concubines, prompting the development of new regulations regarding ritual food offerings. This paper examines these changes with a particular focus on the Daehanyejeon (大韓禮典), the state ritual manual compiled during the Korean Empire period. A key feature of Gungmyo (宮廟) food offerings was the distinctive use of meat dishes (肉膳), ritual vessels (酒器), and tribute items (幣帛). The offerings typically included sliced boiled meat (pyeonyuk, 片肉) and pan-fried fish (jeon-eo, 煎魚), while the ritual vessels used were similar to those used in Jongmyo (宗廟, the Royal Ancestral Shrine). In addition, white silk (白幣) was presented as a form of tribute. These practices largely followed the precedent set by the rites of crown prince shrines and tombs (世子廟墓) and exhibited notable parallels with Uje (虞祭), a type of mourning ritual. This study highlights the institutionalization and evolution of ancestral rites for royal concubines, offering insights into the broader transformation of state rituals and associated food culture during the late Joseon period.
