Abstract
The term Chilgung originated in 1929, when Deogangung was relocated to the existing six shrines, which were then referred to as Yukgung (六宮). The emergence of Chilgung reflects the fact that the ancestral shrines of the Joseon Royal Family were maintained and even expanded during the Japanese colonial period. At the time, Chilgung was under the jurisdiction of the Yi Royal Family. The Yiwangjik (Office of the Yi Royal Family), an organization established to ensure the welfare of the Royal Family, was responsible for managing Chilgung. Therefore, any discussion of Chilgung’s history must take into account the role of the Yiwangjik. It is believed that Chilgung functioned as a sacred space for the Joseon Royal Family, where ancestral rites continued to be observed by the Yi household throughout the colonial period, and where members of the royal family continued to visit. Of course, it is difficult to claim that these rites were held at the state level as they had been during the Joseon dynasty. Nonetheless, the emergence of Chilgung can also be interpreted as part of the broader reorganization of the administrative apparatus managing royal affairs—particularly in the context of the the reorganization of Deoksugung’s facilities after the death of Emperor Gojong in 1919 and the restructuring of the Yiwangjik following Emperor Sunjong’s death in 1926. It appears that Prince Yi (英親王), who was residing in Tokyo, reorganized the Yiwangjik after being invested as “Yi Wang” (李王) following the death of his half-brother, Emperor Sunjong. As part of this effort, he sought to elevate the status of Deogangung, the shrine of his biological mother, by merging it with Yuksanggung. Therefore, Chilgung should be understood as a ceremonial space whose existence and significance were closely tied to the continued presence of the Yi Royal Family and the administrative authority of the Yiwangjik.
