Abstract
Currently, COVID-19 is spreading widely around the world. This study is to estimate the infection heterogeneity of COVID-19 in Korea, and to present policy implications for disease prevention and control based on the empirical results. For the empirical analysis of this study, the Bayesian estimation method is applied complimentary, including the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), which is a method of estimating negative binomial distribution parameters that analyze infection heterogeneity in disease and biology. The summary of the estimation results performed in this study is as follows. First, the estimate of COVID-19 infection heterogeneity in Korea is 0.27 for the maximum likelihood estimator, 0.27 for the Bayesian Gibbs sample, and 0.26 for the Bayesian variation estimator. This estimate is higher than 0.5, the average of previous studies conducted in other countries. On the other hand, it is more homogeneous than MERS-CoV, a similar disease family. Second, if calculated based on this estimation result, it could be seen that 80% of all infected people in Korea were infected by 20%. Finally, the policy implications for disease prevention and control are briefly presented based on the results of the estimation of infection heterogeneity.
