Abstract
This study examined the relationship between audit market competition and capital cost. In addition, institutional investors and large accounting firms have a moderating effect on the relationship between audit market competition and capital cost. The study was conducted on the final 1,702 companies(firm/year) listed on the securities market(KOSPI) from 2010 to 2014. First, companies in the industry with high audit market competition have high capital cost. These results are interpreted as requiring higher rewards because high competition among auditors in the capital market will affect the deterioration of audit quality. Second, institutional investors showed that high audit market competition reduced the effect of raising capital costs. Institutional investors are perceived as positive in the market because they recognize high audit market competition as a high investment risk and perform more active surveillance activities. Third, large accounting firms(Big4) have shown that high audit market competition reduces the effect of raising capital costs. Large accounting firms(Big4) in global alliances are known to have higher audit quality than small and medium sized accounting firms. Since such high audit quality is positively recognized in the capital market, high audit market competition is interpreted as reducing the effect of raising capital cost. This study has the following contributions. First, it extends the audit market competition research to contribute to the academic community. The preceding study examined the relationship between audit market competition, audit quality, audit fee, and audit time. Second, the impact of capital costs on audit market competition has implications for supervisors who need to maintain constant audit quality and achieve capital market efficiency.
