Abstract
Chingghis Khan reorganized conventional tribe systems to fonn Mongolia again in Chiliarchies and to give enfeoffment to Altan Urug of his family as well as meritorious retainers who had a lot of merits to unify the empire. The tribes that were disorganized by Chiliarchies system were merged into powerful Ulus by the enfeoffment and to be absolutely governed by Khan of the Mong이 Empire as well as the princes. The characteristics of the eufeoffment in early era of the Mongol Empire at early era of the Mongol Empire at ‘the Secret History of the Mongols’ as well as ‘Jami al-Tawlirlkh’ can be summarized as follow: Firstly, both ‘the Secret History of the Mongols’ differed from ‘Jami al-Tawli꺼kh ’ at description of the enfeoffrnent that Tolui who was the youngest son of Chingghis Khan occupied. ‘Jami al-Tawlirikh’ described number of residents of Tolui as I 01 ,000, while ’the Secret History of the Mong이S’ did it as 5,000. The number of the enfeoffment of both differed each other because the latter recorded early enfeoffment immediately after Chingghis Khan’s being crowned while the former did repeated enfeoffment at the end of Chingghis Khan. Secondly, the second problem is enfeoffment of Chingghis Khan’s half brothers and children born of concubine. ‘The Secret History of the Mongols’ discriminated between legitimate children and children born of concubine, while ‘Jami al-Tawlirikh’ succeeded evenly. The enfeoffment was distributed differently depending upon blood ties, so that Cbingghis Khan’s sons were given more enfeoffment than Chingghis Khan’s younger brothers were done, except for Otchigin. Thirdly, ‘Jami al-Tawarikh’ described that Chingghis Khan gave other sons than Tolui 4,000 evenly, and ‘ the Secret History of the Mongols’ did in different way. The difference occurred because of the succession depending upon old and young. And, ‘Jami al-Tawarikh’ tended to success to Chingghis Khan’s sons evenly except for the youngest son, while ‘the Secret History of the Mongols’ gave more success to the eldest son. The enfeoffment system that was important political system of the Mongol Empire being nomadic military power displayed large power through external conquer war. The enfeoffment system made princes join conquer wars actively to contribute to geographic expansion of the Mongol Empire. The princes who bad organic relations with geographic expansion of the empire were given new territory after conquer war to expand enfeoffment continuously. The princes who had exclusive ownership in Ulus were forced to have conflicts with Khans of the Mongol Empire who gradually pursued centralized authoritarian rule.
