Abstract
Jukseoru served as the representative banquet venue of the Samcheok Dohobu and functioned as the official site for ceremonial feasts held in local government offices during the Joseon period. In particular, the summer banquets attended by the Governor of Gangwon Province—who stayed at the guesthouse Jinjugwan— operated not merely as sumptuous feasts but as important arenas of political exchange and communication. These banquets featured abundant food and drink, poetic exchanges, and the cheongga-myomu performances of ginyeo. In classical poems, cheongga was praised as a “clear, ringing sound like jade being split,” attesting to its high artistic refinement. The ginyeo were portrayed not simply as performers but as cultural agents who facilitated aesthetic and emotional interaction; Sin Gwang-ha, in particular, delicately depicted their names and graceful presence in his verses. Of the 267 poems related to Jukseoru, forty-six describe boat excursions on the Osipcheon River, demonstrating that seonyu (boat outings) constituted a central element of the banquets. Provincial governors boarded ornate pleasure boats—hwaseon or nanju—to enjoy banquets held on the water, where music and performance intertwined as symbols of authority and refined taste. Kim Guiju and Ju Se-bung vividly captured the fantastical atmosphere of Jukseoru at night, illuminated by fireworks and torchlight. These poetic accounts closely resemble the banquet scenes depicted in <Wolya Seonyudo>, offering valuable clues to the actual appearance of Jukseoru banquets. Taken together, the Jukseoru banquets embody the essence of Joseon leisure culture, where natural scenery, architectural space, artistic performance, and social interaction converged. As such, Jukseoru holds significant cultural-historical value as a sophisticated, multi-layered cultural venue.
