Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze the location of the Heungjeon-ri Temple site located in Heungjeon-ri, Dogye-eup, Samcheok-si, Republic of Korea to determine its ancient old roads. In order to do so, we attempted to find the old roads mentioned in the article below. Results showed that there was no Tongrijae (Pass), which is the current route (transport route), among the old roads from Taebaek-si to Heungjeon-ri, Dogye-eup, Samcheok-si during the period of Unified Silla and the early period of Goryeo. The route from Heungjeon-ri to Tongrijae (Pass) is a cliff route in which the altitude increases suddenly and is very long without a flowing stream, making it not good to walk. Instead, it is presumed that the old route during that period was from Samsuryeong (Pijae Pass), located in the north of Taebaek-si through Dongak to the Heungjeon-ri Temple site, and then to Dogye-eup next to Osipcheon Stream along Heungjeoncheon Stream. This old road will be referred to as the “Samsuryeong (Pijae Pass) Route.” The Samsuryeong (Pijae Pass) Route was used because there are no sections of cliffs, it was relatively easy to walk, and the Heungjeoncheon Stream flowed as both a stream and a valley, offering drinking water in an emergency. The distances between the transport route using Tongrijae (Pass) and route using Samsuryeong (Pijae Pass) were similar, something that may have been taken into consideration when choosing routes.
