선거경합도와 투표율의 관계: 한국 역대 국회의원선거 통합분석

초록

이 연구는 후보자 간 득표율이 접전일 때 과연 투표율이 높아지는가 하는 점에 대해 우리나라국회의원선거 중 민주화 이후 치러진 모든 선거결과를 대상으로 선거구별로 선거경합도와 투표율 간의 상관관계를 경험적으로 검증하고자 하였다. 투표율을 종속변수로 하여 독립변수로 선거구별 1위와 2위 후보자 간의 득표율 차이인 선거경합도와 지역주의 변수 그리고 후보자 수를통제변수로 설정하였다. 분석결과 기존 연구 등이 가정하고 있는 바와 같이 선거가 박빙일수록투표율이 올라간다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 단순히 투표율과 선거경합도에 관한 스캐터플롯을 그려보았을 때는 상관관계가 없는 것처럼 보였지만 다른 변수들을 통제하거나 보다 정확한 통계치 등을 가지고 살펴보면 다르게 나온다는 것을 보여주었다. 또한 지역주의가 여전히 투표율증가에 기여하고 이 변수를 통제할 때에도 선거경합성이 투표율 증가에 기여한다고 본다.

Abstract

This study deals with how electoral closeness affects voter turnout in the National Assembly elections from 1988 to 2012, using district-level election results. In our model, the dependent variable is voter turnout at the district level. The independent variable of primary interest is electoral closeness measured in terms of the difference in vote share between the winner and the runner-up. The model has two control variables: regionalism and the nominal number of candidates. We confirm that close elections tend to increase voter turnout, as in other earlier studies. In particular, we find that electoral closeness still positively affects turnout, even when regionalism is placed under control. The effect of the number of candidates, however, does not seem to affect turnout, which needs further verification.
