Abstract
This article is an analysis of “Yan Ping Da Wen 延平答問”, a collection of correspondence between Zhu Xi (朱熹: 1130∼1200) and his teacher Yan Ping Li Tong (延平 李侗: 1093∼1163). I examined the significance and orientation this book had in the formation and development of Neo-Confucianism. Moreover, I investigated the philosophical concerns that Yi Hwang (李滉: 1501–1570, pen name: Toegye), a Confucian scholar of Joseon, had when engaging with 'Yan Ping Da Wen,' thereby elucidating one of the crucial issues within 16th-century Joseon Confucianism. "In a letter from 'Yan Ping Da Wen,' the teacher Li Tong posed an important philosophical question to his disciple Zhu Xi regarding the 'recognition of the state before emotions are aroused (未發 氣象的 體認).' Furthermore, Li Tong instructed his disciple to always engage in 'cultivation in daily life (日用處)' and 'nourishing and preserving the mind's true nature (存養).' This study of understanding the principles of the Dao (道理) in everyday life later stimulated the philosophical concerns of the Joseon scholar Yi Hwang." Yi Hwang, fundamentally a Neo-Confucian scholar grounded in the teachings of Zhu Xi, was also a unique figure who placed great emphasis on Li Tong's 'Theory of Seeking the Mean through Tranquil Sitting Yi Hwang's thought organically integrated several key elements: the issue of 'recognizing the state before emotions are aroused,' transmitted from Li Dong to his disciple Zhu Xi; the practice of 'nourishing and preserving the mind's true nature in daily life'; and the task of 'understanding the principles of the Dao' based on 'studying the classics to grasp the underlying principles (讀書窮理)' - a focus of Zhu Xi himself. Zhu Xi emphasized the study of 'tranquil sitting (靜坐)' and 'attaining knowledge by investigating things (格物致知)' as equally important, highlighting the importance of achieving understanding and enlightenment through 'investigating things and exploring principles (格物窮理)' and the study of the 'mind's entirety and its great function.' In contrast, while Yi Hwang fundamentally shared Zhu Xi's perspective on self-cultivation, he placed greater emphasis on the practice of 'reverence (敬)' rather than the efforts of 'attaining knowledge by investigating things,' as demonstrated in his own work, “Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning (聖學十圖)”, particularly in the 'Diagram of the Great Learning (大學圖).' Furthermore, Yi Hwang more actively recognized the efficacy of Li Tong's method of 'maintaining tranquility (主靜法)' than Zhu Xi did. The teachings of Li Tong, which advocated grasping points where the principles (道理) clearly manifest in daily life, are presumed to have stimulated Yi Hwang's reflections on the manifestation and dynamism of principles (理). Yi Hwang's distinctive thoughts in 16th-century Joseon evolved through philosophical reflections on the ideas of Li Tong and Zhu Xi, critical exploration of Ming Dynasty's Neo-Confucianism of the Mind, and vigorous debates with contemporary Joseon Confucian scholars. Central to the vigorous intellectual exploration spanning China and Joseon at the time was the compilation “Yan Ping Da Wen” by Zhu Xi. Confucian scholar Yi Hwang critically explored the significance of this book and creatively reinterpreted it within the context of 16th-century Joseon.
