주자서절요의 편찬이 퇴계학 성립에 미친 영향

Abstract

This paper is to examine the influence of compilation of Jujaseojeolyo (朱子書節要) on the establishment of the Toegye study by confirming the time and reason of the compilation of Jujaseojeolyo by Yi Hwang (李滉). The purpose of this is to confirm how Yi Hwang understood and interpreted the study of Zhu Xi and what parts of such study he inherited to establish the study of Toegye. Through this, we can understand the direction of the Toegye study and its details. To achieve this, the paper reviews whether the compilation of Jujaseojeolyo is related to his philosophical stance by confirming the time when Jujaseojeolyo was compiled and the importance on Sadanchiljeong and Simgyeongbuju started appearing. Based on this, Chapter 3 discusses the reason why Yi Hwang understood the study of Zhu Xi with a focus on Zhu Xi's letters and analyzes his perspective towards characteristics and significance of Zhu Xi's letters. This is to figure out what kind of impact the compilation of Jujaseojeolyo had on the Toegye study. Then, Chapter 4 looks at the impact of Jujaseojeolyo compilation on the establish ment of the Toegye study by focusing on characteristics that have appeared in the process of compiling Zhu Xi’s letters from Jujadaejeon to Jujaseojeolyo. Through the above discussions, this paper confirms that the direction of the Togye study is not about completing the metaphysical structure or theoretical framework of the study of Zhu Xi. Yi Hwang perceived the study of Zhu Xi as specific realization methods through these letters, and was interested in actual practices that were required to happen in various situations based on such understanding. This is why Yi Hwang highlighted the importance of Zhu Xi’s letters in the same level as the Analects of Confucius, and this is the same way as how he valued Sohak. In particular, the importance on Sohak shows that the “practice” and “hard study” that Yi Hwang valued should be based on concrete reality rather than theories or justification. This is his idea of how knowing and practices are supposed to be combined, which clearly shows the direction of the Toegye study and is referred to as “practical philosophy.”
