Abstract

This study examines the process of the rejection of the Kija Joseon (箕子朝鮮) theory, focusing on the historical transition where the national name of Joseon was changed to Daehan (大韓). In the early Joseon Dynasty, the Kija Joseon theory was adopted as part of the Three Joseon System (Samjoseon Ch'egye), serving as the core justification for establishing the state's legitimacy and legitimizing its diplomatic relationship with the Ming Dynasty (大明). However, towards the end of the Joseon Dynasty, a critical awareness emerged regarding the national name "Joseon," which symbolized a vassal state enfeoffed by the Chinese emperor. In this shifting era, the national name "Daehan" was adopted. This move, following the severance of the tributary relationship after the Sino-Japanese War, expressed the will to join the modern international order governed by the Law of Nations (Man’guk Gongbeop). It thus manifested a new concept of "Empire (Jeguk)" that designated a sovereign independent state, distinguishing it from traditional notions. Textbooks published during the late Joseon period (Hanmal) also reflected this new historical view by describing Kija Joseon as an independent state equal to the Central Plains dynasties. Subsequently, starting with Shin Chae-ho’s Doksa Sillon (『讀史新論』, 1908), the Kija Joseon theory came under systematic criticism. With the re-adoption of the name "Daehan" by the Provisional Government in 1919, the ideological justification of the Kija theory was brought to an end, and the internal contradictions of its tradition were academically overcome through the critical methodology of modern historiography. Notably, Chŏng In-bo (정인보) and Yi Pyŏng-do (이병도) critically examined records in the Weilüe (『魏略』) and Sanguozhi (『三國志』) to demonstrate that King Chun (準王) was an indigenous king of Old Joseon unrelated to Kija, a significant achievement that dismantled both the Kija Joseon theory and the Three Han Orthodoxy Theory (Samhan Chŏngt’ongnon). Concurrently, scholars in Japan and China also raised views, sometimes political and sometimes objective (like Gu Jiegang), that rejected the Kija Joseon theory. After liberation, both South and North Korea adopted the names “Republic of Korea” and “Joseon” (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) respectively, yet shared a common rejection of the Kija Joseon theory. This rejection reflected a decisive epistemological shift from the Neo-Confucian worldview to a modern historiographical perspective shaped by changing global dynamics. It provided the ideological foundation for the national designation “Daehan,” symbolizing a break from Sinocentric legitimacy and the assertion of sovereign historical identity. The dismissal of the Kija Joseon theory and the adoption of “Daehan” were thus inseparably linked within the broader context of constructing a modern nation-state, serving as key elements in the institutionalization of an independent national identity rooted in indigenous historical consciousness.
