Abstract

The Latin American Wars of Independence in the early 19th century refers to the breakup of colonies and the formation of modern states. This process began when the Junta Provisional was organized to respond to the crisis of the Spanish royal regime in 1808. However, the criollo of the colonized states who demanded the formation of the Junta Provisional did not demand immediate independence. The criollo who were influenced by the Spanish liberalism ideology requested the autonomy of the colonized states but they did not actively deny the Spanish king Fernando VII. The South American Wars of Independence progressed based on the Junta Provisional which was comprised of the local elites whereas the War of Independence in New Spain broke out from the 1810 public revolt. Ironically, the War of Independence in New Spain ended as the First Mexican Empire. However, the discussions on public sovereignty and representative system, which were brought up during the first half of the war, from 1810 to 1815, showed the foundation process of Mexico. After the First Mexican Empire, which disappeared in merely 2 years, the United Mexican States was based on the new political concept which came to the fore during the dynamic process of the war. The various political standpoints which appeared in the first half of the War of Independence are important connection points for understanding the middle processes - the breakup of colonies and the formation of modern states. This study aimed to understand the War of independence from the perspective of political history. For this aim, it will be stated that public sovereignty and representative system are the new political concepts -the background of the foundation of Mexico- by analyzing the political standpoints of Miguel Hidalgo, Ignacio López Rayón, and José María Morelos who led the main forces during the first half of the war.
