Abstract

This study analyzes how the concepts of the Uncanny and the Abject are manifested in Contemporary ceramic figures created by women artists since the 2000s. The Uncanny is characterized by the anxiety caused when strangeness emerges within familiar forms, while the Abject is defined by the repulsion that occurs when what has been rejected yet cannot be completely eliminated returns. Both concepts, adopted in Contemporary art to explore the body, the unconscious, and identity, share a common tendency in Contemporary ceramics to subvert traditional femininity and foreground repressed bodily experiences, expanding into a new visual language. In particular, female ceramic artists develop various strategies such as combining human and nonhuman elements, fragmenting and reconstructing forms, and dissolving the boundaries between the interior and exterior of the body. The Uncanny is expressed through the combination of heterogeneous materials and surface treatments that distort or erase the vitality of the human body, whereas the Abject appears through the erosion of unfired clay and the fluidity of glazes that evoke bodily decay, fluids, and secretions. These tendencies demonstrate that Contemporary ceramics not only visualize the Uncanny and the Abject through the materiality of clay, but also deepen the transgression of boundaries and layers of emotion inherent in both concepts. In ceramic figures, both concepts share common strategies of combining external elements and emotionalizing materiality, yet the study focuses on how they differ clearly in their origins and in the kinds of emotions they provoke. Ultimately, this study reveals that these two distinct concepts collectively serve as mediators that establish new aesthetic possibilities and expanded domains of the female body in Contemporary ceramics.
