Abstract
This study analyzes the grotesque nature in contemporary ceramics, focusing on Korean artists’ ceramic sculptures. It examines the meaning of grotesque and selects artists and works that reveal this characteristic to explore their nature. The findings show that the meaning of grotesque varies according to the era and environment, influencing the grotesque nature in artists’ works. In the medieval period, characterized by a God-centered view, grotesque elements primarily depicted bizarreness and repulsion. After the medieval period, the grotesque was expressed through fantasy, satire, unfamiliarity, and fear. Analyzing the grotesque from modern to contemporary times as an aesthetic category of ugliness and its correlation with Sigmund Freud’s concept of the uncanny, disharmony, formlessness, ugliness, unfamiliarity, and fear emerged. The study then analyzes the works of contemporary ceramic artists Seok Chang-won, Lee Yun-hee, Woo Kwan-ho, and Lee Hye-jin, who have been recognized in prestigious exhibitions like the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale and the Seoul Contemporary Ceramic Competition. The analysis reveals both commonalities and differences in their works. Common themes include bizarreness, repulsion, disharmony, and unfamiliarity. Differences are seen in Seok Chang-won’s bizarreness, Lee Yun-hee’s anxiety, obsession, and unfamiliarity, Woo Kwan-ho’s satirical representation of contemporary issues, and Lee Hye-jin’s focus on disharmony, imbalance, and inaccuracy. Overall, the study shows that the grotesque nature from the medieval period to the present has evolved from a purely negative connotation of repulsiveness and bizarreness to a multi-layered characteristic.
