Abstract
This study aims to examine how 'imperfection' in ceramic art can function not merely as a flaw or an incomplete state, but as a formative, aesthetic, and philosophical potential throughout the creative process. Ceramic creation involves a process where unpredictable elements—such as kiln firing, glaze reactions, and material properties—interact with one another. These inherent characteristics often lead to transformations and accidents beyond the artist’s control. In response, some ceramic artists have come to embrace imperfection not as a failure to be corrected, but as an expressive and integral component of their creative work. The study first outlines general definitions of 'perfection' and 'imperfection' and explores the philosophical interpretations of imperfection within both Eastern and Western intellectual traditions. It then analyzes how imperfection emerges and is accepted in ceramic art through four aspects: transformation in making, transformation of material, transformation of technique, and transformation of concept. Particularly, this research focuses on artists and artworks in the post-Abstract Expressionist movement in contemporary ceramics who have embraced imperfection as a core element of creation. It investigates how these artists have transformed imperfection into sculptural characteristics, creative methods, aesthetic experiments, and even the ultimate goal of their practice. Ultimately, this study seeks to expand the meaning of imperfection from being seen solely as a technical limitation or error in ceramic art, to being understood as a formative and aesthetic element intrinsic to the essence of creation. In doing so, it aims to offer a theoretical foundation for understanding the creative tendencies and sculptural thinking in contemporary ceramics.
