Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the aesthetics of disgust showing in Jenny Saville’s work based on abject concept of Julia Kristeva. First, this paper examined Jenny Saville’s work representing the huge and incomplete body. This body has a subversive and resistant character that menaces the existing order and authority and breaks up a fixed idea. Second, this paper considered symbolic meaning of Jenny Saville’s work which escapes the still and ideal traditional maternal image and represents the abject maternity. In a patriarchal society the pregnant body has been recognized as disgust and it is not easy to find an image of pregnant women in art. Saville represents the active and realistic pregnant women. She focuses on flesh and deals with obesity, incompleteness, maternity. Abject body in work of Jenny Saville expresses an aesthetics of diversity which dismantles the stereotype of beauty and ugliness, normal and abnormal. As Jenny Saville's work shows the grotesque and uncanny body, it excellently expresses the style of abject art. Her work reveals a paradoxical beauty that raises questions about beauty tamed by the media. Also, it has feminism significance because it re-emphasizes the woman’s body from the art of patriarchal ideology and speaks in a new language, women’s art language. In consequence, Jenny Saville's work reconstructs the semiotic as a space of mother which is a base of abject theory from the symbolic where everything is under control by rule. This study not only ascertains her own art world of Jenny Saville pursuing the aesthetics of disgust, but also bears significance to enlarge a range of understanding about work.
