Abstract

This study analyzes the musical ≪Jeokro: The Song of Dew≫ (2017), a significant Korean creative musical, through Lynn Margulis’s symbiosis theory, focusing on core concepts like symbiogenesis, Serial Endosymbiosis Theory (SET), and autopoiesis. Departing from prior music-focused research, this paper investigates how’s music, narrative, and staging interpenetrate beyond mere juxtaposition or mixture, with elements maintaining their independence and uniqueness to form an inseparable new whole via ‘artistic symbiosis’. Chapter 2 details Margulis’s symbiosis theory, establishing her innovative pers- pective—that cooperation and fusion, not just competition, are crucial evolutionary drivers—as the study’s theoretical foundation. Subsequently, Chapter 3 analyzes’s symbiotic imagination by examining: musical symbiosis in the creative fusion of traditional musical idioms (such as Jeongga, Sanjo, Ssitgimgut) and modern musical idioms (jazz, classical), alongside Korean and Western instruments; narrative sym- biosis through the intersection of real figures (Park Jong-gi, Kim Gye-seon) and a fictional character (Sanwol), and the overlapping of past and present narratives; and staging symbiosis via the organic interaction of music, physical actions (like ssireum – Korean wrestling), and stage space (such as the use of the bamboo screen, bal). The analysis confirms as an outstanding example of symbiotic imagination, where heterogeneous artistic ‘entities’ dynamically interact to create an organic ‘artistic organism’. Employing ‘symbiosis’ as its analytical framework, this study offers a multi-layered understanding of, aiming to contribute a new perspective and theoretical expansion to the study of contemporary Korean creative musical theater.
