미국 현대음악 속 국악 연주자의 협업 음악 연구: 가민-로텐베르크(Ned Rothenberg), 김도연-모린(Chase Morrin)을 중심으로

글로벌 시대, 세계적인 한류 문화와 K-컬쳐의 영향으로 현대음악계에서 한국 전통음악 연주자의 역할과 지위는 점차 강화되고 있다. 이들은 국제 무대에서 외국 아티스트와의 협업을 통해 현대음악의 실험음악적 측면과 전통적인 한국 소리를 혼합하여 독특한 음악 세계를 선보인다. 본 글은 한국 전통악기 연주자와 미국 작곡가의 협업에서 연주자의 개성적인 창작성 이 발휘된 양상과 그 예술 미학적 의미를 조명한다. 그간의 연구에서는 완성된 악보와 작곡가 중심적인 창작 연구에 집중되어왔다면, 본 글에서는 과 정으로서의 창작과 연주자가 최종 창작까지 주체성을 발휘하는 면모에 집중한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 미국 작곡가 로텐베르크(Ned Rothenberg)와 피리 연주자 가민의 <중모리 블루스>(Jungmori Blues, 2018), 미국 재즈 작곡가 모린(Chase Morrin)과 가야금 연주자 김도연의 <크록>(Croak, 2017), 두 가지 사례를 탐구한다. 필자는 문헌 자료 및 미국 뉴욕 현장 공연 참석, 인터뷰, 악보 및 음원 분석 등을 통해 두 협업은 이종음악 장르의 혼종적 교섭 뿐만 아니라 창작 과정에서 국악 연주자의 관행과 혁신이 더해져 새로운 음향 세계를 창출하고 있음을 주장한다. 구체적으로 한국의 전통 산조와 미국 블루스 음악을 결합한 <중모리 블루스>에서 가민은 서구 아방가르드 전통에 동화되기보다는 이질적인 음향적 질감 속에서 고유한 전통 소리를 표현 했다. 한편 국악과 재즈의 융합으로 창작된 <크록>에서 김도연은 교차 문화적 즉흥연주로 전통악기의 문화 관행적 틀을 벗겨내어 타 음악 장르 간의 경계가 허물어지는 개성을 들려주었다. 이들의 혁신적 작업은 기존의 이중 문화 악기가 빚어낸 상호문화성의 미적 패러다임에서 점차 각 아티스트 간의 상상력, 예술적 자율성과 영감을 자극하는 상호음악성(intermusicality) 의 창작 의의를 드러낸다.
Abstract
In the global era, Korean traditional music performers are gaining prominence by collaborating with international artists, showcasing their individual creativity. This article focuses on the dynamic creative process in two collaborations: “Jungmori Blues” (2018) by Gamin and Ned Rothenberg and “Croak” (2017) by Chase Morrin and DoYeon Kim. Through comprehensive reviews of literature, live performances, interviews, and score analysis, the study highlights the entanglement of distinct cultural genres and the novel contributions of Korean traditional instrumentalists. These collaborations foster intermusicality, encouraging imagination and artistic autonomy within an intercultural aesthetic paradigm.
