Abstract
This study examines the distribution and typological characteristics of bone arrowheads excavated in the Yeongnam region and investigates their functions, uses, and diachron- ic changes through production reconstruction and penetration experiments using bone ar- rowheads excavated from the Bonghwang-dong Site in Gimhae. Approximately 940 bone arrowheads have been identified in the Yeongnam region, with their number increasing markedly during the Three Kingdoms period despite the widespread use of iron. They are classified into six types. During the Samhan period, Type II, characterized by an undeveloped tang, was predominant, whereas Type V, with a de- veloped tang, and Type VI, resembling iron arrowheads, increased during the Three King- doms period. Morphological changes associated with improved functionality are also evi- dent, including an increase in arrowhead length and an expansion of the sharpened edges. The production reconstruction experiments demonstrated that two to four bone ar- rowheads could be produced from a single deer metacarpal or metatarsal, while types with tangs and barbs required more complex production processes and relatively longer manu- facturing times. In the range experiments, bone arrowheads achieved greater distances than iron arrowheads. Penetration experiments showed that bone arrowheads had sufficient penetrating capability against hemp cloth, leather armor, and wooden shields. In contrast, they failed to penetrate iron lamellar armor, thereby demonstrating the functional limita- tions of bone arrowheads. These results indicate that bone arrowheads developed toward enhanced penetration and offensive effectiveness through increased blade length, an expansion of the sharpened edges, and the development of tangs and barbs. Their uses are also considered to have di- versified into hunting, warfare, funerary, and ritual purposes. In particular, during the Three Kingdoms period, bone arrowheads cannot be understood merely as substitutes for iron arrowheads but appear to have served practical functions in actual combat. In addition, the distribution patterns of bone arrowheads from the Sinmun-ri Site, Bonghwang-dong Site, and Daeseong-dong Ancient Tombs were examined to provide a preliminary understanding of the production, distribution, and consumption system of bone arrowheads in Geumgwan Gaya. The widespread use of bone arrowheads is understood to have resulted from the growing demand for weapons during the Three Kingdoms peri-od and their high production efficiency. From the fifth century onward, however, their use gradually declined in response to changes in battlefield conditions, including the increasing prevalence of iron armor.
