본 논문은 현대미술의 창작 과정에서 전통적인 상징물의 재해석 가능성을 ‘상징물의 재탄생’이라는 개념을 통해 창작자의 관점에서 연구한다. 연구는 서양의 전통 미술 작품에서 등장하는 신화적․종교적․역사적 배경을 가진 기물이나 동․식물, 인물의 자세와 신체적 특징, 로고 등의 상징물을 주요 연구 대상으로 삼았다. 이러한 상징물은 과거 이데올로기나 사회적 가치 체계를 시각화한 것들로 고정된 의미를 전하는 도구의 역할을 했다. 하지만 현대미술에서 상징물은 고정된 의미에서 벗어나 다양한 관점으로 재해석되며 그 과정에서 역설, 전도와 같은 유머러스함이 드러난다. 본 연구에서 언급하는 유머러스함의 배경에는 ‘놀이’가 있다. ‘놀이’에서 드러나는 자유로운 표현은 대상의 고정된 의미를 해체하고 재구성하여 낯섦, 충격, 조롱, 이질성, 이끌림, 위트와 같은 효과를 이끌어내며 작가의 시대적 메시지를 담을 가능성을 보여준다. ‘상징물의 재탄생’은 전통적 권위와 위계를 비판하고 동시대의 맥락에서 과거의 것을 통한 새로운 의미를 창출하는 시각표현의 가능성과 함께 전통미술과 현대 미술의 간극을 줄이고 상징물을 현대미술을 위한 창작의 영감에 활용하는 가능성을 역시 제시하고자 한다. 더 나아가 한국 전통문화 속 상징물을 이용한 ‘상징물의 재탄생’으로 확장하는 기반을 마련한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the possibility of reinterpreting traditional symbols in the creative process of contemporary art from the creator’s perspective through the concept of the ‘rebirth of symbols’, primarily focusing on symbols appearing in Western traditional artworks. Once used as tools to convey fixed meanings, visualizing ideologies or social value systems in contemporary art, symbols break free from their fixed meanings and are reinterpreted through various perspectives, revealing humor through paradox and inversion. The concept of ‘play’ forms the foundation of the humor in this study. The free expression manifested in ‘play’ deconstructs and reconstructs the fixed meanings of subjects, generating effects such as unfamiliarity, shock, mockery, heterogeneity, attraction, and wit, thereby demonstrating the potential to convey the artist's message. The ‘rebirth of symbols’ aims to critique traditional authority and hierarchy while presenting the possibility of visual expression in contemporary contexts.
