Abstract

Misinterpretations of Koguryŏ music in Chinese and Japanese historical texts can be attributed to inadequate critical analysis of historical sources. Misinterpretation of Chinese records has also led to another flaw: the music of Koguryŏ and Paekje has been described as the “international,” and instrumental interpretations have been approached solely from the perspective of international acceptance and dissemination. Another problem inherent in this term “internationalism” is the absence of a subjective approach to interpreting music history. This perspective views the Korean Peninsula as a transit point along the cultural diffusion route from the Silk Road to Japan. This perspective, viewing ancient history as a “history of the reception of foreign music,” views music history not as a cultural asset of its own, but as a product of external influences. The question of “what was it like in that era?” within the context of everyday life and myths within a cultural context should be the most crucial approach in music history.
