Abstract
The Tosa Diary is recognized as Japan’s first kana diary, using only 62 Chinese characters in its entire text. However, its literary style, the content of its waka poems, and its rhetorical techniques reveal numerous influences from Chinese poetry and classical allusions, all of which are deeply connected to the author Ki no Tsurayuki’s profound knowledge of Chinese literature. A review of prior research indicates that many scholars have discussed the influence of Chinese literature on Heian-period Japanese literature from a comparative literary perspective, but few studies have focused specifically on the reception of Chinese literature in Tosa Diary. This paper aims to examine how Tosa Diary assimilated and absorbed Chinese literature from three perspectives—literary genre, the borrowing of Chinese poetic prose, and the reception of Chinese cultural elements—and further explore the role Chinese literature played in promoting the formation of Japan’s native culture.
