본 연구는 미적판단과 관련된 이론적 배경을 중심으로 실제 스포츠현장과의 접목을 통해 스포츠가 지닌 미적 가능성에 관해 분석하였다. 이러한 연구는 스포츠가 예술인가? 혹은 그렇지 않은가?에 대한 존재론적 해답을 가능하게 할 것으로 보인다. 일반적으로 예술작품에서는 미의 추구가 가장 주된 관심이 된다. 그러나 스포츠에서 미의 추구는 몇몇 종목을 제외하고는 부차적인 것으로, 선수들이 기술을 연마하고 훈련에 힘쓰는 것은 미적판단보다는 기록단축이나 등수와 같은 양적판단과 관련하여 목적행위가 이루어진다. 또한 경기 중 선수들이 보여주는 기술의 완전함은 미적가치와 미적 질과 관련되고, 이는 관중들로 하여금 미적판단을 가능하게 하는 대상이 된다. 이와 같이 스포츠가 지닌 미적 가능성은 스포츠의 예술성을 논의함에 있어서 타당한 이론적 근거가 될 것으로 보인다. 뿐만 아니라 스포츠경기에서 선수들이 선보이는 기술이 단지 기계적 반복의 완성으로만 그치는 것이 아니라 여기에 “예술이다”, “근사하다”, “멋지다”라고 평가할 수 있는 미적판단이 부가된다면, 경쟁적 인간행위를 초월한 스포츠에 대한 재평가가 이루어 질 것으로 보인다.
Abstract
To suggest an answer over the question, is sport art or not, which has been ambiguous in the philosophy of sport, I focus on the aspect of aesthetic background in this article. The most important factor for the purpose of the performance in art is about beauty but it is the secondary one in sport. The quantitative judgement which is estimated result of performance through the numbers such as world records, ranking, winning or losing of game is more preferential than aesthetic judgement in sport. In addition, perfection of the skills during the competitive game is related to esthetic merit and esthetic quality. The aesthetic potential, therefore, is defined as the resonable background to discuss about artistic character in sport. In this viewpoint, the skill done by athletes in the game is not only the outcome of repeating hard training like any machines but is that the basis to reestimate the definition of sport if it has esthetic judgement which could judge sport with these terms, "it is art or graceful or great."
