Abstract
The objective of this study is to look into the sportsmanship of Kwon Tae-ha, the first Korean who participated in the 10th L.A. Olympic marathon. In 1932, during the Japanese colonial era, Kwon Tae-ha was the first Korean marathoner to take part in the 10th L.A. Olympics. Although he ranked 9th, he is considered to have made a type of resistance against the unfair race strategy of a Japanese runner. He also became an example of ‘an indomitable spirit’ for all by showing the superhuman attitude of finishing the entire course despite the fact that it was hard enough to lose consciousness. Moreover, as a physical education administrator, Kwon Tae-ha had various influences on Korean sports such as the widespread popularity of marathons, activation of the Korean Olympic Committee, and physical education in schools during the transitional period in the 1960s. By studying in the U.S., he developed his capacity in sports science and as a leader with excellent and advanced techniques in marathon running and theoretical knowledge. Finally, his sportsmanship inheres in the statement that, “It is necessary to develop an indomitable spirit to display your own ability completely by exerting the utmost effort until you become unconscious due to physical pain.” For him, this could apply to resistance against the contempt from the Japanese, the independence of his country, or his aspiration of dominating the world.
