Abstract

In this study, we analyzed data from the Korean Innovation Survey(KIS) to determine how collaboration breadth, collaboration depth and cognitive distance affect a firm's innovation performance. Collaboration breadth means the number of types of collaboration partners when a firm collaborates with external partners for innovation. Collaboration depth means how important the firm recognizes its collaboration partners in collaborative activities. Cognitive distance means how similar the collaboration partners are to the focal firms in terms of business field, pursuit of economic benefits, and incentive system. As a result of the study, we found that radical innovation performance was related to the collaboration breadth and cognitive distance in an inverted U-shape. Incremental innovation performance was found to have an inverted U-shaped relationship with collaboration breadth and collaboration depth, and showed a particularly strong relationship with collaboration depth. And when the firms collaborate with external partners, incremental innovation requires a narrower range of partner types than radical innovation. This study gives the following implications. First, if a firm's goal is radical innovation, it is better to collaborate with partners who are not too cognitively distant, but without too many partner types. Second, if the firm's goal is incremental innovation, the main purpose is utilization and improvement, and in-depth knowledge in a field is required, so continuous and in-depth collaboration based on trust relationships with a small number of types of collaboration partners is necessary.
