Abstract

Strategic alliances are becoming one of the most important strategic decision tools for external knowledge sourcing in the radically changing business environment. Prior studies about strategic alliance mainly focused on the influence of alliance activity on the innovation performance of the focal firm, but failed to capture the role and effects of its internal knowledge base that enables receiving external knowledge flows. The main contribution of this paper is the consideration of the moderating effect of breadth and depth of the firm's internal knowledge base on the relationship between alliance intensity and innovation performance. We test our propositions using a sample of 113 U.S. biotechnology firms. The results indicate that both alliance intensity as well as breadth and depth of the internal knowledge base influence innovation performance. We also find evidence for the moderating effect of the breadth of the internal knowledge base on the relationship between alliance intensity and innovation performance.
