Abstract

This study aims to propose a detailed framework for Korean language education within the caregiver training program for international students. To this end, the concept and scope of Korean language education in foreign caregiver training universities were first examined from the perspective of Korean for Specific Purposes (KSP), clarifying that the caregiver training program is characterized by the features of higher vocational education that simultaneously require both disciplinary understanding and practical performance. Based on sources such as the Evaluation Indicators and Manual for Universities Designated for Foreign Caregiver Training, the study identified the importance of Korean language education in diverse contexts, including supporting major course completion, cultivating communication skills for practical training, and enhancing literacy for qualification examinations. Reference was made to the Japances case to derive implications for designing occupational language education for foreign caregivers. On this basis, the study ultimately proposed three functional types of courses—“disciplinary understanding-oriented,” “practical conversation-oriented,” and “qualification preparation-oriented”—as a framework for designing a Korean language curriculum for caregiver training. Furthermore, it suggested principles of modular curriculum design that can be flexibly applied according to learner levels and educational stages. Finally, the study presented a curriculum arrangement example within a four-semester college system, strategically linking each semester’s Korean language courses to major courses, thereby demonstrating feasibility of implementation in actual educational settings.
