Abstract
This study was conducted to qualitatively examine the psychosocial challenges and recovery processes experienced by young adults preparing for independence. Nine young adults were selected using snowball sampling. Data were collected through three small group interviews, with two to four participants each. The data were analyzed using generic qualitative research methods. The results revealed that these young adults experienced various psychosocial difficulties stemming from negative relationship experiences prior to independence. They experienced abuse and neglect from their families of origin, as well as violence, discrimination, and conditional acceptance within the care system. After leaving care, they experienced feelings of helplessness, fear of failure, and career insecurity. Furthermore, they faced the unsettling reality of their immature inner child as their repressed desire for dependence surfaced. Furthermore, they struggled to form stable interpersonal relationships amidst ambivalence, including profound loneliness and a fear of intimacy. These challenges were overcome and recovered through stable social reconnection. The core recovery experiences of these young people preparing for independence were related to active and trust-based case management by dedicated self-reliance support staff, professional psychological counseling, and self-help groups. Based on the analysis results, policies and practical implications for supporting young people preparing for independence were discussed.
