Abstract

In this paper, I revealed the facts related to the naming and repairing of Ohjukhen and examined its contemporary meaning. However, these are not well known facts in the history of Ohjukhen. The first person to be named Ojukhen was Yi Sa-on(李思溫), who was Yi I(李珥)'s maternal great-grandfather. He planted black bamboo(烏竹) around the house he inherited from his father-in-law, Choi Eung-hyun(崔應賢). And he used black bamboo as name of his house and used too it as his own nickname. Two poems of Seven-Syllabic Code Verses of Yi Sa-on and four poems of Ryu gwan(柳灌), Sin Kwang-han(申光漢), and Kim Se-pil(金世弼) remain on the signboard, and this poem shows that Ojukhen was a hidden space of Yi Sa-on. The three were fed up with the political situation, which was confused by the Literati Purge of 1519(己卯士禍), and their poems show their envy of Yi Sa-on's retirement. Ojukhen is thought to have been repaired several times over the years. However, literature records can confirm it twice, in 1709 and 1782. Key figures of Noron were actively involved in these two heavy repairs, and during the previous repair process, Gyeokmongyogyeol(擊蒙要訣) handwritten draft and an inkstone used by Yi I appeared. Ojukhen was the birthplace of Yi I, the master of Noron, and as his relics appeared and the Eojegak was built under King Jeongjo's order. Accordingly Ojukhen became more widely known and the number of Noron people visiting increased rapidly. In 1788, King Jeongjo made his subject bring the Gyeokmongyogyeol handwritten draft and Yi's inkstone from Ojukheon and saw it. Then, he composed a preface on the Gyeokmongyogyeol and composed and wroted the in·scrip·tion on the inkstone, and returned and made his subjects build Eojegak(御製閣). King Jeongjo's article contained a deep sense of respect for Yi I. In particular, the words that praised Yi I as Confucius of the Land East of the Sea and compared him to Chu Hsi(朱子) are highly praised by previous kings. Noron people recognized that Yi I was the only one who inherited Confucius' Tao. And it can be understood that what King Jeongjo said in his writing was made in response to such Noron's evaluation.
