Abstract

This paper aims to analyze why some nations are poor than others. The rising poverty has been one of the biggest problems confronting all nations including advanced industrial societies. The social democratic welfare regimes have not succeeded in amelriorating the rising poverty level thouth their ultimate goal is to achieve equality. A wide variation in poverty exists among nation as well as over time. This paper accounts for the variation by looking at institutional mechanisms through which poverty is affected. Emphases are placed on both political institutions and labor market institutions that influence the poverty rates. Hypothesis to be tested is the following: Either coaltion goverments or single party governments are more effective in fighting poverty. In addition, electoral systems are investigated to test whether proportional representation plays the role of lessening poverty.
