Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate and review the main characteristics of Thai politics, economy, and international relations during the year of 2020. Thailand is still being criticized for democracy and human rights issues by the international community even after the transition to a civilian government. Although a general election was held to return to a civilian government after five years of military regime from 2014, it is still the Prayut regime that rules the country. This was predicted as the election of the prime minister was held by the 2017 Constitution. In response to this, large-scale anti-government protests, led by students yearning for democracy, were held in Thailand in 2020. Their demands went beyond the resignation of the prime minister and constitutional amendment and extended to an unprecedented royal reform. This was caused by strong doubts about the so-called Thai-style democracy, where the election results were rejected, and the military coup and king's approval of the coup brought political stability. The Thai government is putting pressure on them by applying Article 112 of the Criminal Code (the lèse-majesté law). As neither the Thai government nor the protesters are likely to narrow the disagreement, the protests seem to be prolonged. The Thai government has declared a state of emergency since March 2020 and has been highly recognized for its successful containment of the COVID-19 outbreak. However, as the state of emergency extends, the government is being criticized for taking advantage of the pandemic to suppress anti-government protests. The Thai economy in 2020 recorded its worst in 22 years since the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Its quarantine measures, such as the border closure and ban on entry of foreigners, in particular, wreaked havoc on its economy that is highly dependent on the tourism industry. As the pandemic began to subside in May as a result of the Thai government's preemptive and proactive measures, the Thai economy started to recovery after the third quarter with improved economic activity. As COVID-19 transmission became higher again in mid-December 2020, however, it seems uncertain if the economy will recover in 2021.
