Abstract

In the third year of the global pandemic and the eighth year of the military regime’s authoritarian rule in Thailand, signs of change generated by the crises emerged in 2022. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha survived the fifth court case against him in September while the conservative right-wing elites that had supported Prayut’s regime began to split, reducing the possibility of power consolidation among them. On the other hand, millennials and Gen Z activists that have arduously led the anti-military democratization movements since the 2014 coup succeeded in entering the political arena, augmenting the progressive political parties’ influence and popular base. The latter group is now preparing for a generational shift in politics through the general election in 2023. Easing the travel restrictions across the globe in 2022 helped revive the tourism industry in Thailand, reducing the unemployment rate and recovering private consumption and investment levels. The three-year economic recession under the pandemic left a lesson to Thailand which heavily relied on tourism and export-oriented manufacturing. The signs of change emerged when the Thai economic sectors started looking into the possibility of developing digital infrastructure, a green and low-carbon production base and improving labor conditions, especially through the increase in the minimum wage. Although the unstable international economic conditions shall continue, the Thai economy may well recover to the pre-pandemic level in 2023. Passive responses to the crisis in Myanmar and the failure to produce visible impacts from the regional summit convinced the international observers of Thailand's declining diplomatic power and regional leadership role. To restore the previous economic and diplomatic leadership on the regional stage, Thailand shall proactively resolve the domestic and external crises and integrate the demands for reform from the young generations and the working class.
